Why are experienced strawberry pickers not always fully focused? The company Lemmen Aardbeien also struggled with this question. How can I stimulate my employees more, owner Liesbeth Beijes wondered. Following their own path

More than 15 years ago, when they started their business, Liesbeth Beijes and her husband Peter Lemmen knew nothing about strawberries. The previous owner offered to teach the couple the tricks of the trade. Three months later we decided to pave our own path,’ recalls Liesbeth Beijes of the early days. Since then we have been working hard. Both in greenhouses and in the field we grow our strawberries on racks.

More performance in less time

For picking strawberries, Liesbeth uses a permanent team of 14 adult employees and a pool of students and pupils. From experience I know that the employees have a lot to offer,’ she continues. ‘Only the picking performance did not show this. I found it difficult to put my finger on it. We tried all kinds of measures to get the productivity up to the desired level.

‘It’s as if the employees have woken up from some kind of sleep mode. GrowPro was just the little boost they needed.’

Since April 2015, Lemmen Strawberries has been working with GrowPro to record labor and harvest. On paper, the performance is now visible. Figures don’t lie. Liesbeth stimulates her team in a simple way to get the best out of it. Each team member receives a weekly private whatsapp message with the minimum, maximum and own score’, she explains. This way employees can see at a glance how they have performed. Each staff member has her qualities and comments. The fastest does not necessarily have to be the best. Speed can also lead to sloppiness. We are also very alert to that.’

Liesbeth recently started using GrowPro for the remuneration of pupils and students. ‘These young employees were used to getting paid by the hour. Why should they work faster? It’s great to see how GrowPro has given them an extra incentive. While picking, they are counting. That way, at the end of the morning or afternoon, they know exactly how much money they’ve made.
